Abstract

The principal and teacher-librarian in one of Canada’s largest high school share background pedagogy, practical examples and reflections on preparing students for information literacy and digital citizenship through creating and implementing the “Learning Leader for teaching and learning technology and teacher librarian” role.

Marlene PonjavicMarlene Ponjavic is an experienced educator who is currently a learning leader in charge of Teaching and Learning Technology at Lord Beaverbrook High School, Calgary Board of Education in Calgary, Alberta. In addition to overseeing the school’s library learning commons, Marlene chairs the technology committee and collaborates directly with teachers and students to enhance the development of information literacy skills and technology. Marlene collaborated with Dr. Dianne Yee, her former principal, to demonstrate the method used to reinvent the concept of the library and to deliver integration of curriculum and information literacy skills, using current technology with students and staff.

Dianne YeeDianne Yee has worked in Saskatchewan and Alberta schools as a classroom teacher, counsellor, resource teacher, principal, and an adjunct professor for MANY years. 😉 Currently she is Director of Area 1, with Calgary Board of Education. She is very interested in counselling, special needs students and inclusive education, and her Master’s degree was in Educational Psychology. As a result of being principal of a technology project school in Saskatchewan in the early ’90s, she developed a passion for working with information and communication technology (ICT) to support teaching, learning and leadership. The research for her PhD investigated ICT leadership in selected technology-enriched schools in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand.
